Daily Life: Parenting Decisions and Child Sports

I’m sure some would label me as a soft mom. I have great kids who are kind, respectful, and smart. They do well in school and don’t cause trouble, so I’ve had it pretty easy. Sure, they don’t always listen, and I get frustrated sometimes, but overall, they’re good kids.

My 9-year-old's soccer team just had their first loss of the season, 5-1, and they were all pretty upset about it. While I was talking to some friends, I noticed my son running laps around the field after playing for an hour. When I asked his dad why he was making him run, he gave me an answer that didn't sit well with me, so I called him out for it.

Now I'm questioning if I'm being too soft as a mom. I remember when I played soccer, my coach made us run laps based on how much we lost by, and it made me hate the game. I'm worried that if his dad keeps pushing him like this, my son might not want to play anymore. Maybe I’m being dramatic; maybe I’m not. I just don’t think punishing my kid for trying his best is the right way to encourage him. Am I crazy for feeling this way?

You're not crazy at all — I completely agree with you. At 9 years old, punishing kids for a loss is just too harsh, especially when they’re giving it their all. Making them run laps after already playing hard only teaches them to associate mistakes with punishment, which can really kill their love for the game.

It's important for kids to learn to enjoy the sport and handle wins and losses without fear of punishment. You’re doing a great job by recognizing this and standing up for your son. Don’t doubt yourself on this!
